용기

흔히들 용감한 군인이란 표현을 쓰지만, 용기라는 것을 자세히 살펴보면 그것이 잘못된 고정관념이었다는 것을 깨닫게 된다.

Courage in fighting is by no means the only form, not perhaps even the most important.
There is courage in facing poverty, courage in facing derision, courage in facing the hostility of one’s own herd.
In these, the bravest soliders are often lamentably deficient.
And above all, there is the courage to think calmly and rationally in the face of danger, and to control the impulse of panic fear or panic rage.

전장에서의 용기만이 결코 유일한 용기는 아닐 뿐더러, 아마 가장 중요한 용기도 아닐 것이다.
가난에 맞서는 것에도, 조롱에 맞서는 것에도, 동료들의 적대감에 맞서는 데도 용기는 있는 것이다.
가장 용감한 군인들은 때로 이러한 면에서의 용기가 개탄스러울만큼 부족하다.
그리고 무엇보다도, 위험에 맞서 차분하고 합리적으로 생각하며, 밀려오는 공포와 분노의 충동을 통제할 줄 아는 것도 용기다.
